A heavily laden A-10 Warthog begins a gentle descending turn turn into the thick and heavy weather below. The Fairchild Republic A-10 Thunderbolt II was designed as the ultimate Close Air Support aircraft. Designed in the seventies to destroy Soviet armor with the jet’s 30 mm cannon, the Warthog continues to serve with distinction. Although over the last few decades, USAF brass have tried to retire the venerable jet, the A-10’s value to ground troops and its new upgraded technology keeps it a valuable asset in the air and the favorite weapon of the infantryman on the ground.
Ask any Army infantry soldier or Marine rifleman caught in combat what his favorite sound is and he will tell you it is the sound of an inbound A-10 firing its big gun.
