This piece was commissioned by Schwan’s Foods Inc. located in Minneapolis, MN. Schwan’s is the parent company that owns the Red Barron Pizza brand.
The squadron began flying in 1979 as a marketing tool for the pizza brand. Beginning with one Stearman biplane giving rides to grocery store owners and pizza customers the team soon grew to include a full Air Show routine with four Stearman biplanes! The Red Barron Squadron was one of the most popular acts on the Air Show Circuit from their beginning until they were dissolved by Schwan’s in December of 2008. The Stearman biplanes flew and entertained millions of Americans for nearly 30 years.
This painting capture’s a bit of the history of the Red Barron team. During their extensive career, the team flew several versions of the Stearman with different markings. This painting captures one of their Arizona visits with a flight near the North Rim of the Grand Canyon.
The painting prominently hangs at the company museum in Marshall, Minnesota.
“Smoke On” is available as a signed, Limited-Edition print on archival paper and as a larger sized, signed Artist Masterwork on canvas.
