It is a bitterly freezing day along the Hungarian border during the winter of 1944. Pilots of the German Luftwaffe climb into the frosty cockpits of their FW-190’s. The men and aircraft belong to German Squadron SG-2 and flew missions against the oncoming Russian Army during the winter of 1944.
Perhaps the most feared of all German Fighter aircraft of WWII, the Focke-Wulf 190 developed a fierce reputation in both air-to-air combat and as a ground attack aircraft. American Bomber crews who often met 190’s over Germany grimly referred to the 190 as the ‘Butcher Bird.’ The fast and tough fighter entered German service in August of 1941 and served until Germany surrendered on May 5, 1945.
